Provided technical assistance using a grant from the BUSAC Fund/COWI to implement an advocacy action to persuade local authorities to pass byelaws to implement riparian policy to restore vegetative cover of Bimbagu River thus retaining and conserving scarce water resources for animal husbandry and sustainable livelihoods. The grant goal was to eliminate the long standing water shortage problem in Bimbagu and its environs. The access to sustained potable water, used by their animals and for the production of local gin (pito) year round, increased their incomes and expanded their businesses not only for VLSA members but for the entire community as well.

Foadaan Foundation in an effort to assist women raise their own capital for their businesses introduced the village saving and loans system in some selected communities. The intervention picked up like wild fire. Now I get testimonies like “I used to cut fire wood to sell to pay my childrens” school fees but now with the introduction of the VSLA, I borrow from our internal loans to pay school fees and pay back from my petty business within 3-4 months. Is a very big relief to me and I can save to improve my working capital too”. From a testimony of this nature you can deduce that some trees are spared.
